The Simple Gospel Message

What People Are

The Gospel literally means “good news”, and the Good News of Christianity is very simple

  1. We have a sin condition that we can’t recover from
  2. God established the Jewish religion to create a Law
  3. Jesus fulfilled that Law
  4. Anyone who believes in Jesus’ sacrifice will live eternally

1. Mankind sinned with absolutely zero excuse for it

  • Some religions may try to disagree with the scope of the sin condition or the intensity of it, but nobody can fully disagree that it’s not a constant human problem
  • Christianity/Judaism have a creation story that fully explains our sin condition
    • The first man and woman lived in the garden of Eden in perfect connection with God (Genesis 2)
      • This doesn’t mean they knew everything, since they obviously didn’t understand nakedness after sinning (Genesis 3:7)
    • The first woman sinned from Satan’s temptation while the first man watched, and then he sinned right afterwards (Genesis 3)
      • Sin is simply doing anything that is against God’s law
      • The severity of sin’s punishment in the Bible seems ridiculous, but it’s because it’s connected to God’s attributes
  • Some people argue that this creation story is symbolic, but it’s hard to imagine what it could be symbolic for
  • Since that fall, we have been cursed for our actions
    • Women have to endure extreme pain during the entire child-bearing process, and painkillers can’t resolve the problem (Genesis 3:16)
    • Men are forced to work hard and constantly to survive, and this is shown by the fact that it’s near-impossible to “escape the rat race” (Genesis 3:17-19)
    • All of humanity has lost connection with God and with nature:
      • Our relationship with God and anything pertaining to God has been severed, with limited interaction and many liars pretending to be from God
      • Our relationship with nature has been cut, and our ability to work in harmony with the world around us is no longer seamless or instinctive
      • Our relationships with each other suffer tremendously, and we don’t understand or comprehend what others think or feel
      • This might seem wrong but it’s for our benefit, since this state of misery would persist if we had stayed in Eden
    • The ultimate consequence for our transgression is permanent death (Revelation 21:8)
    • This would seem unfair that we all bear the burden of our distant ancestors, but we would all repeat that same dumb decision in that context
  • However, this severed relationship wasn’t the end of the story, and God promised that Satan would be struck down later (Genesis 3:15)

2. The Jewish Law shows how impossible it is for us to recover to be in God’s glory again

  • Judaism gives 613 commandments to follow, and it covers some degree of every part of daily life (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy)
  • It is literally impossible to follow all of them, especially since God’s standard is perfection (Leviticus 19:2, Matthew 5:28, Romans 3:23)
    • Not following even one of them condemns a person to destruction in hell (Ezekiel 18:20, Matthew 10:28)
      • This has been contested a lot, but the Bible shows zero evidence that people can cease to exist or that hell isn’t eternal
    • We are all born into sin, and are stuck with the eternal consequences of it (Isaiah 64:6)
  • In the Jewish Law, there are references of a Messiah who will save humanity (Jeremiah 23:5, Isaiah 11:2-5)

3. Jesus fulfilled that Law, and there is a lot of evidence that shows Jesus was unique

  • The Messiah came and fulfilled hundreds of prophecies in the process
    • They had to all be fulfilled (Psalm 40:7, Luke 24:44, Revelation 19:10)
    • The chances of anyone fulfilling all of them are astronomical

  • There is a lot of logical evidence outside of the Bible’s commands that lead to the significance of Jesus
    1. Jesus clearly died by crucifixion and they still haven’t found a body, even with a Roman guard placed to protect it
    2. Jesus’ disciples had real experiences that they thought were appearance of Jesus after his crucifixion
      • The disciples were clearly transformed from common tradesmen to being fully willing to die for their message
      • James, Jesus’ biological brother, had an experience that he thought was a separate appearance of Jesus
      • Paul, a prominent Pharisee with nothing to gain from Jesus, had a similar appearance of Jesus and converted to Christianity
    3. Within 1-2 years from Jesus’ crucifixion, Jesus’ message was being proclaimed consistently by many
      • This is contrary to normal human behavior if the whole thing was a successful scam
  • Jesus’ fulfillment completed the need for the Law, and anyone who wants to follow Him simply has to believe (Matthew 5:17)

4. Repent and believe

  • Some Christians require that you be baptized, pray a prayer, join a church
    • Baptism is a symbolic action of devotion, not a matter of salvation (1 Peter 3:21)
    • Praying a prayer is a symbolic action of devotion as well, but isn’t as important as the meaning you put behind it
    • No specific denomination is exclusively correct or the most accurate, though some are more than others and some are complete cults
  • Speaking in tongues and being baptized in the Holy Spirit are connected to God’s work, not salvation
    • Some people express a “deeper” connection to God through tongues, but we will get to that later
  • Salvation is a one-time thing of declaring Jesus is Lord and believing He died for your sins (Romans 10:9)
    • Things like communion, baptism and honoring the Sabbath have nothing to do with salvation and everything to do with your relationship with God
  • Catholics say that purgatory is for sorting out unconfessed sins, but the only instance of it is in the apocrypha (2 Maccabees 12:39-46)
    • The passage could just as easily refer to the spiritually dead on this earth, and it’s a vague verse in a non-canonical text
    • The only reason people believe in purgatory is the comfort that comes from the opportunity to postpone the punishment for sins committed
  • The promise of salvation is not only to go to heaven someday (John 3:16, Romans 5:10, 1 John 4:9-10)
    • The core of Christianity is about having a relationship with the one true God (Romans 8:31-39)
    • There are promises of an incorruptible and eternal crown of glory for believers (1 Corinthians 9:24-25, 2 Timothy 4:8)
      • This crown spiritually may symbolize the others that are brought to Christ through your testimony (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20)
    • All Christians receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16 & 12:13)
