A New Creation

Back To Main
The Simple Gospel

As a Christian, you have a new identity

  • In Christ, you become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
    • You are made perfect in the way God sees you (Hebrews 12:2)
    • You have a new heart and a newly reborn spirit (Ezekiel 36:26)
    • You’ve been blessed with the Holy Spirit and can now communicate with God (John 14:15-18)
    • The Holy Spirit is transforming and renewing your mind as you let Him (Romans 12:2)
    • As part of the Church, you are becoming the Bride of Christ to be in union with Him forever (Revelation 19:6-9)
  • You have a new home in heaven (John 14:2)
    • This naturally forfeits your home on earth and makes it transitional
  • You will slowly bear more spiritual fruits over time (Galatians 5:22-23)
    • More loving, kind, gentle and patient
    • More joyful and good
    • More at peace
    • More faithful
    • More self-controlled and disciplined
  • You will be healed from all your damaged emotions and past traumas (Matthew 11:28, James 5:13-16)
    • This doesn’t mean God heals all your physical problems, since most of them serve a spiritually greater purpose
  • In all of the improvement, it is rarely instant
    • A Christian doesn’t become instantly Christ-like, they are slowly changing to become Christ-like (Titus 3:5)
    • The speed of the change directly ties to our willingness to give up our past (Romans 12:2)

This new identity will not mesh with your old life

  • The world around you does not like this “new you” (John 15:18-19)
    • In fact, you’re not going to make friends with the world (James 4:4)
  • Though it’s completely worth it, you will endure a ton of hardship (2 Corinthians 6:3-5, 2 Timothy 4:5)
  • Your greatest network will be as part of the Body of Christ, discussed later

There are a few things that being a new creation does not mean

  • While on this earth, you’re still not completely sinless or perfect (Philippians 3:12, 1 John 1:8)
  • There is no Bible verse that says your life will be easier, better or you will acquire unbelievable financial wealth (Malachi 3:10, Luke 6:38)
    • In fact,
    • God does bless you immeasurably in other ways:
      • Family and friends
      • Physical health
      • Every need provided
  • Your relationship with Christ isn’t connected to religious practices or mystical experiences
    • Though religious practices can solidify our faith, they can also drive a wedge between you and God if we do it for the wrong reasons (Matthew 23:27-28)
    • You shouldn’t search for mystical experiences, they will come when God wants them to come (Matthew 12:38-39)
      • This includes miracles, healing or any other supernatural phenomena
      • This can also include “peaceful” worship music session or trying to attain a spiritual feeling

This new relationship with God requires unconditional devotion

  • God paid for you with the life of His son, so it was a major cost to get you (1 Corinthians 6:20)
    • You were a slave with sin, and now you are a slave to Christ (Romans 6:18-22)
      • Slavery in Christ is unbelievably free, but it is a slavery with a new master (Matthew 11:29-30)
  • Everything you own goes to Him (Matthew 5:27-30, Matthew 13:44-46)
    • God will give you more than everything you’ve had, but you need to give it all up (Matthew 19:27-30, Mark 10:28-31)
    • This doesn’t necessarily mean you burn bridges, relationships and opportunities but does mean that you are ready to at a moment’s notice
  • Everything you have to put before Christ includes the following:
    • Possessions, of any kind (Matthew 19:23-26)
    • Money (Luke 6:30)
    • Family, friends and any other valuable relationships (Matthew 10:37-39)
    • Dreams and goals about the future, along with any planning about it (Matthew 6:26-34, Luke 12:22-30, James 4:13-16)
  • You are in Christianity for the long-term once you’ve started it (Luke 9:61-62)
  • Your new relationship with God requires removing all of your past sins and anything else that can get in the way of communicating with Him
